Hoop Dance

Hoop dancer Missy Cooke leads classes in the Lansing area and helps participants relax, let loose, and smile more by getting up, getting out, and starting something new!

Missy's adult hoop class is great for beginners or anyone who wants to focus on core hoop techniques, or reverse current hooping. The class will cover core hooping techniques such as waist and shoulder hooping, and a few basic arm and hand tricks. After that you'll learn a hoop dance sequence that combines several tricks into an easy routine you can practice at home or mix into your current flow.

On-body hooping uses every muscle in your body so come prepared with a water bottle and comfortable clothing. Remember, bare skin grips the hoop better than clothing, so shorts and and tank tops are recommended. Beginners are welcome. You do not need to be able to waist hoop to attend.

Inner and Outer Doors — A Haiku Workshop

the outer door swings in
the inner door swings out —
you are free to come and go

In this workshop, we will look at the symbolic connections and interpenetrations of the inner and outer worlds. We will look outward to nature and inward to our own thoughts, feelings, insights and understandings. We will then “paint” our insights with brush strokes of words in three short lines. Our senses, memory, and reflections will all help us to connect with the power of contemplation, both through inner awareness and outer observation.

It doesn’t matter whether or not you’ve written a haiku before – we will not be counting 5-7-5 syllables, though it’s fine if you’d like to. In fact, no prior writing experience of any kind is needed! Just bring your senses and an openness to experiencing and connecting with nature – outer and inner – in a fresh way. At its heart, haiku is about being fully aware in the moment, seeing something in a new way in that moment, and expressing that image, insight, and wonder in a compressed form.

it all wants to come in —
leaf, bird, water, light —
and return as praise and gratitude
